Emergencies
The ill bird loses body heat very quickly when it stops eating, as the energy reserves are depleted by illness. By re-establishing the normal body temperature and blood sugar levels, most lives are saved.

Pet Bird Care
Hand reared parrot birds make the best pets. Parrots have always made excellent pets because of their affectionate and loving nature. As well, their ability to imitate speech and noises has endeared these birds to man since ancient times.

Budgerigars
The 4 million years of prolific breeding still remains in the blood (genes) of the modern day budgerigar and can be restored by providing it with exactly the same conditions that made the wild bird so successful. We call this "Good Aviary Management".

Canaries
Breeding canaries for competitive exhibition has always been an extremely difficult challenge for seasoned fanciers let alone newcomers to the hobby, largely because the canary of today is so much larger than the original birds.

Chickens & Fowl
Backyard and exhibition poultry flocks are at a distinct health advantage because they run free. Free-range poultry are able to select exactly what they need from the yard in terms of trace elements and vitamin-rich green food.

Cockatiels
Cockatiels are an excellent choice as a pet or an aviary bird. As a pet, they are good talkers and they breed readily in the aviary. The wild cockatiel is a grey colour and the sexes are distinguished by the cheek and face colour.

Eclectus
Eclectus are a remarkable bird and ideally suited as a pet. The ability of the Eclectus to communicate with humans is a result of their extremely inquisitive nature, a feature strongly linked to their life in the rainforest canopy.

Gouldians & other Finches
This section outlines the care and breeding of Gouldians and other finches. It provides an introduction into nutritional and health issues for breeders. Dr Marshall's "Gouldian & Finch Health Book" is available now. This full colour book is 280 pages long and discusses the care and breeding of all finches in detail.

Hand-Rearing Birds
Whatever the reason you may be called upon to take up the task of hand-rearing a baby bird, you must remember that it is very time consuming, especially with chicks that are very young.

Lorikeets
The lorikeet is a playful and energetic bird and in its natural environment eats nectar and fruits rather than seeds. Dr Marshall's Health Programme for lorikeets provides all of the necessary vitamins and minerals for continuing health and happiness for this delightful pet.

Parrots
There are more health problems during the breeding season than at any other time and ultimately your success at breeding depends largely upon the health of your flock.

Pigeons
Dr. Marshall’s knowledge and expertise with racing pigeons has been used to develop health programmes and strategies for fancy pigeons and commercial squab farms.

Urban Wildlife
Birds and have taken advantage of the modern-day cityscape. Over the past two decades, the increasing popularity of native gardens has attracted coastal native bird species back to the cities.

The process of attaining good health in the pet shop is achieved by using proven health programmes. The following health programmes have been used in specialist bird shops for over 20 years with outstanding success.

Pet Bird Training
In conjunction with Dr Marshall, Tailai O'brien has developed special regimes for successful bird training and behavioural development. Classes for new or difficult birds are conducted by Tailai, here at the hospital.
